That is, it is the end-product of a failure. In software systems, a failure is the production of incorrect results (or results not expected by the user) by executing software. Faults are errors that lead to software failures. Our design objective is to produce fault-tolerant systems, those that won't malfunction even though they contain faults (though be aware that failure may occur only under specific operational conditions). This can be done in three ways, figure 3.7. Visualize, if you will, a whole set of problems that can lead to system malfunction.
